And these were the main resources I used throughout my project.
Eminent is over (finally) and I couldn’t be happier. Not only was I able to help the night be a huge success, I managed to perform my speech better than I thought possible. I honestly believe that because of “unintentional genius” that speech was elevated to a level that I did not think it could have been. I was happy every time I managed to assist someone else, and ultimately I am glad with how the evening went.
Lets start things off with the setup of the evening. I managed to show Lucas where the ramps were, and assist with the removal of three tables. After that came learning center setup and applying costume. While my learning center went up without a hitch, Alicia (who was beside me) was plagued with trouble. The paper on her walls constantly fell, and eventually we halved the amount of paper there and proceeded to only have paper on the lockers. During this time I also got dressed, tried to get my hair to go down, and gave the remainder of my white hair spray to Francisco. Unfortunately there was little to none left when I gave it to him, making it relatively useless.
And now, what I would deem as the most memorable part of the evening, speeches. Things did not go as planned, and I couldn’t have been happier. For the intro of my speech, I opened a bottle of “beer” that I took swigs of throughout the speech. However, it was a bottle of root beer, which I pretended to take swigs of during practice. While doing so, I ultimately shook it greatly to the point where it erupted in the middle of my speech. Now this was not much of a problem as after I noticed it, I attempted to time my drinking with its eruptions. However, that too caused problems because the beverage did include bourbon extract leaving my throat and (due to bubble ups) nose with a distinct burning sensation. It was because of this and the fact that my beer was leaking, to laugh once or twice during my speech. The first time I managed to stifle it in drinking. Unfortunately the second time, I did laugh noticeably and forgot my next line because of it. However at that point my angry little speech had become something truly comedic, which stood out more than I could have hoped for. The speech is something I hope to remember forever, as it was something truly magnificent.
After speeches, I had a truly wonderful time at my learning center. I managed to talk to many people about George Lucas and his work, as well as convince a “Trekkie” about in what ways Star Wars was superior to Star Trek. I was also happy to feed many people countless cookies which were in the shapes of various Star Wars characters and ships. While few people had even heard of his lesser known works, I do believe I managed to implant the seed of interest within most. I was happy with my time there, and managed to share a great number of laughs with some of the Talons Alumni that came around.
During cleanup, I managed to show a couple of nines how to bring down cafeteria tables, as well as bring many food tables from upstairs to storage. I also assisted with food cleanup by sorting and placing the remaining food items in the fridge. I was quite happy with how cleanup went, although from the comments from others, this feeling was not universal.
All in all I found myself quite pleased with how the evening went and I look forward to watching it all next year.
This year the library experience was very different, for many different reasons. While this year I did not walk away with any book, I still feel that I left with a great deal of knowledge. For this time I feel that I got a much greater feel for the nines than I ever had access to previously.
As I stood in in front of the library, I found my mind looking back to all of my hopes, dreams and fears that came with being a new talons student. But this year, I no longer feel the same way. The memories came with an essence of accomplishment that dampened the fear that came with them.
I came into the trip with little intention to get a book, but instead to enjoy and relive the experiences I had last year. The library was magnificent once again, but it was not as intimidating as it was last year. While once it had represented everything that I do not yet know, it now felt much closer to a challenge. Questioning what I have and what I will accomplish outside of its walls.
MacLeod’s bookstore was awe-inspiring as always. But it too felt different from last year. It seemed more friendly than it was last year. There was no pressure or fear to accomplish something while I was there, this time I was there simply to enjoy myself. This was not entirely what I had expected. I had guessed that it would no longer be a stressful experience, with that gone I found myself disconnected from the entire experience. No book managed to intrigue me, and because of that I did not purchase anything while I was there.
Throughout it all I was able to connect with a couple grade nines, and on that alone I was glad that I went.
For my eminent project, I have chosen to focus on George Lucas. George is a american writer, director and producer. After graduating with a fine arts degree at the age of 23, he attempted to join the air force as an officer, but was declined due to numerous speeding tickets. That same year he re-enrolled as a USC graduate student in film production. During this time he directed his student film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which was later converted to his full-length feature film THX 1138. After that he wrote and directed many films including Star Wars, Indianna Jones, Pan and many more. His films have won 54 awards and been nominated an additional 32 times.
I chose do my project on George Lucas because of his eagerness to break boundaries. I admire how many projects and companies he has established in order to advance their respective areas. The ability to dream and imagine are things I greatly respect, and George has managed to use his to carve out an incredible place in this world. I am interested in writing and special effects, and I hope that this project will help me explore both.
My goal this year is to perform a well rehearsed speech, as I feel that that is something I struggled with last year. I would also hope that I could produce a detailed learning center that does not rely on a poster board, as I feel that I was lacking in that category as well last year.
This year I believe that I will be able to accomplish much more than I did last year, and I look forward to what he will be able to teach me about myself.
In case anyone else is looking for places to look for info on Elvis I have left a short list of websites and books that I looked through to find info for my project.
I was able to use this page to find out one of Elvis’s commanding officers who I used as my point of view in my speech.
This one is incredibly straightforward it was used so that I could learn more about him in preparation for cross referencing.
Also straightforward, it provided info on what his military service looked like pre- cross referencing.
Was used as a launchpad from which I found various links to images that I used throughout my project.
Was used both for info as well as listening to music.
Were both used for more thorough information about Elvis’s military service.
Elvis: What Happened?
Published July 12th 1977 By: Steve Dunleavy
Was used to look at the darker side of his career from about as close a source as you can get for it was written by a former bodyguard of his.
Those were the information sources that I used throughout my Elvis project and I hope that it was all you needed.
While people have been able to pass on stories vocally physical documentation of events and struggles has been a surefire way to preserve your thoughts.
The eminent person study has been a struggle at every corner, more challenges at every turn, heck even the straightaways have been directly into molasses. Now despite those troubles we have been asked to talk about our document of learning which realistically can be seen as the entire project. So throughout this post (if you actually read it through) you will be able to read about my goals for my speech and learning center and what made them troublesome to accomplish.
Starting my speech I hoped that it would be powerful and that it would fit cleanly in the center of time limits. Very quickly I ran into to many problems to keep track of. The first problem (and also the last problem) with my speech was that it was actually to short! I figured if anything my speech would be to long. So throughout the entire writing process I worked incredibly hard so that I could put in more details and emotions so that it would meet the minimum of five minutes. About halfway through when I had finished my fourth fifth and then sixth speech draft my computer decided that it should crash. In an instant I lost hours of hard work with no way to recover it. Now while I am sure that many of you are thinking that auto save protected the lost work I assure you that it did not. Eventually I managed to re write the speech but it never felt like the sixth draft did. Now as difficult as that seems my learning center was easier but little did I know that it should not have been.
I had little to no idea of what could actually be done for my learning center until the day before eminent. Unfortunately by that point it was already to late to improve what was there significantly enough to make mine as good as it could have been. So after quietly weeping after realizing how far away others projects were in comparison to mine, I vowed that mine will be so much better next year.
People. People are always thinking about how the world will go on without your contributions. Will history even remember what you did throughout your life? The answer is that people may not remember but your actions will live on long past anyone you know. We are constantly shaping those who surround us and they also in return, shape us. It is us who define each other, it is us who influence our friends suggestions and thus it is through actions that we will live on. For the suggestions that you influenced no matter how insignificant they may seem can always amount to something far greater than anyone.
Many weeks ago we started a project so that we may study someone and how their actions affected the world. Now while there was much work to be completed it all led up to Night of the Notables or Notn for short. This was an event organized by the students that showcases both the grade nine and the grade tens work on who they thought changed the world.
Night of the notables will be something that nobody can afford to forget. Whenever anyone can get sixty people working towards a common goal without anyone deviating from the plans or refusing to participate, you know that you have something truly special. That night everyone was both working to fulfill their own duties but whenever it was possible everyone would assist anyone when needed. I have never seen or felt such a feeling of community like that before. Some jobs to help organize may have been completed long before the night started does not mean that those people would slack off in any way. If you a set of hands and claimed you had nothing to do you would immediately be handed so much work you questioned how you never saw it before. Now while it may seem that the entire event is just controlled chaos i can assure you that there are few things farther from the truth. While some minor things were not completed until just before they were required to be done, that in no way affected the evening negatively. Now while everyone was quite productive there are some who I would like to specifically recognize for their contributions. First off I would like to recognize Hamilton for being able to instantly decide to help set up Notn rather than go to the basketball game. Brian was someone who helped me and Hamilton bring up the food tables which was no easy task and thus he also deserves recognition for doing so. Now while those are the ones I would like to specifically recognize everyone did so much to contribute and on the off chance they end up reading this I would just like to say thank you. Now while the people were magnificent the event itself was incredible the work itself was also quite “notable”.
Going into school that morning I firmly believed that my learning center was well thought out and executed. Little did I know just how much thought and detail everyone had put into theirs which quickly managed to make mine pale in comparison. While I had met my goals I did not know just how much blood, sweat and tears went into everyone else’s. Next time I am certain of what more I can and will do in order to improve the pitiful display that I had this time.
Music has been an important factor relating to history since it began. Throughout the millennium there have been those who would experiment with new sounds and would be cheered for doing so. One of the most notable figures in the world of experimentation with music is Elvis Presley. He lived in poverty and moved around a lot during his early life claiming he would play music on the grandest stages in America. Little did they all know that he would actually end up as an incredibly successful musician.
Born on January 8th 1935 and died on August 16th 1977. Elvis Presley’s life was short but well lived. He lived in both Tupelo and Memphis during his early years and thus was exposed to different musical styles. He released his first single “Heartbreak Hotel” during January of 1956 and it quickly became a number one hit in the united states. However this may have been due to his sound was a combination of rock as well as soul. This blurred racial boundaries and thus made him popular but somewhat controversial as well.
On March 24th 1958 Elvis was inducted into the army. He could have easily became an entertainer for the troops and taken the “celebrity wimp out” but he refused and wished to be treated as an ordinary soldier. That choice is truly what keeps him as an ordinary Joe in my eyes and not just another self obsessed musician. He loved his music yes, but he was willing to risk his life for the rights and freedoms that he had become accustomed to. It is this moment where he surpasses countless others and thus should be recognized for it. This was not the only opportunity he was given to leave ordinary military service either. He was offered in 1959 to join special services but he refused. He was determined to not be treated as anything more than a soldier and that is incredibly admirable. Now just because he was an ordinary soldier does not mean that he did not do extraordinary things while in service. Elvis Presley both donated his army wages to charity as well as bought televisions for his squad.
He did well by all those that he could and throughout his life did countless live performances. He recorded many songs and was dubbed “the king of rock” or simply “the king”. Unfortunately the king’s greatest weakness was his food addiction. Some say that he ate close to 100 000 calories a day and this lead to his tragic heart attack on August 16th 1977. By that point drugs and his food addiction had made him a shell of his former self. His death was tragic but by that point he had already lost his life.
I am looking forward to learning more about Elvis for many reasons. He has been my favorite musician for quite some time and thus learning more about the man behind the music is a fascinating idea. Another reason that I wish to learn more about him is related to the fact he was a humble person that refused to dodge military service. He was willing to face his problems head on and that is something that this entire world could use more of. This quality in anyone is not only admirable it is respectable and thus I hope to honor it and the person that he was during this project.
All in all Elvis Presley life was short but bright and I hope that he will be remembered for his success and not his shortcomings.
The written word has always been a way for anyone to show their opinions to the world and throughout history has changed. The first real attempts at writing were small images or markings to represent sounds or things. However from that point it has expanded exponentially to the point where anyone (such as myself) can post my thoughts and ideas on the internet for the entire world to see with minimal effort. Now in the last millennium or so a book has been the go to source for good writing.
Now my class was lucky enough to go on a field trip to Macleod’s bookstore and the Vancouver public library. The library was truly stunning. Many levels of books books and more books made it difficult to find anything specific but thanks to computers used to search the library I was able to pinpoint the location where some relevant books should have been. Unfortunately there were housed in compact shelving and therefore i could not retrieve it without assistance. It was difficult to find someone who could access the shelving but I was thankful when I found someone that could. Just to make things annoying the book was not there so unfortunately I did not retrieve any books on Elvis Presley. Macleod’s bookstore was surreal. It is also the true embodiment of the saying “controlled chaos”. Books thrown everywhere on the floor on the shelves and some even laid simply in piles or strewn against walls. Now while it is basically anarchy inside there is a sense of calm and beauty with the way things work. As always just being surrounded by books makes one feel that they should be quiet and calm as much as they might want to do otherwise. The smell of old books calms the nerves and makes one feel at home with their surroundings. Now as nice as all that is I was (thankfully) able to find a book that appears quite interesting called “The Serpent And The Rainbow”. Thus far it has been about one scientist who is trying to figure out Haitian zombie’s and how they work. To the point at which I have reached it is a compelling story that has asked some big questions which are difficult if at all possible to answer.
So in the end it was great day looking at the written word and how it has affected the world.
